By this time in our life, we usually want things
to be simple, maybe even easy. We have lots of energy for things we want to do, but little for the things that have
to be done. Take cooking for example. I love to cook, so making meals is a joy to me. However, this is not
the case for most women I know who are over the age of 60. So, imagine going to a job every day where cooking for 80-100
people is required. Not just cooking, but making meals that will appeal to a variety of tastes while maintaining the
nutrition standards of the California Department of Aging’s nutritionist. Enter our cook, Linda Gillian.
She’s amazing. What you eat each day is set by me as I make the menus, but how it’s cooked, what it looks
like and keeping the costs within a strict food budget is her job. She has great help by Kim Gillian who manages the
Meals On Wheels program and Joey Kelly who prepares the salads, desserts and generally assists Linda. Last year our
kitchen staff prepared over 15,000 meals. Give them a hand, folks, especially if you know what it takes to put a meal
together even if you don’t want to cook that day. I’m grateful for them every day.
